14 n LER 2018 The laser head relocates to a new home position for the rotary. Place the wine glass on the rotary and ensure it is level before engraving. Though not required, some users opt to mask their glass with a thin, wet sheet of newspaper or a thin layer of dish soap prior to engraving. This can help with heat dissipation over the area being engraved. We opted for the thin layer of dish soap in this project (see image 2). Whether or not you apply any masking or dish soap is merely a matter of personal preference, so don't feel like you have to. Send the job to the laser with the correct parameters for your system and press go. For this project, we used a 50-watt Helix with the following settings: • Raster • Speed: 40% • Power: 100% • DPI: 300 • Stucki Dithering Pattern • Art: 80% black Images 3 and 4 illustrate the glasses being engraved, and then the final engraving results. Glass engraving without a rotary? It can be done. While the rotary attach- ment allows users to easily engrave around cylindrical items, you can still engrave some types of glassware without this resource. Images 5 and 6: If you don't have a rotary attachment, one work-around is to use a specialty lens and create a fixture to hold the glass on the table while you engrave; here, we used a pen jig and some modeling clay.
