33 S T A R T H E R E 2 0 1 8 TERMS Spindle: Device that holds the cutter during the engrav- ing process. Diamond engraving: Action of using a non-rotating cone-shaped tool dragged with pressure through metal. Tool includes a diamond tip. Sometimes referred to as "diamond drag" or "scratch" engraving. Diamond graver: A non-rotating diamond tool consist- ing of a steel shank with an embedded diamond chip. Cutter: A tool used in rotary engraving that cuts into the surface of different materials at specific widths. Some are inserted into a spindle assembly and rotated, some are dragged for different effects/looks. Shear: A device that looks like a paper cutter but is designed to cut sheets of plastic and metal precisely and efficiently by lowering a top blade against a fixed blade. Beveller: Tool bit with cutter angle to create deep incised cutting for a sloped look. Used with badges, signs, etc. General Rotary Tips for Various Substrates Jason Pritchett, Gravotech Metal (unless surface scratching with a diamond tip) and wood are similar, in that rotating carbide (usually half-round) cutters are used to cut a depth. Cutter selection and speed/feed rates are the difference between the substrates, including plastic. Metal does better with a lubrication; plastic and wood use suction to remove chips. Glass is done with a rotating, faceted, diamond, and also lubrication. The best glass engraving is similar in quality to a sandcarved result, and looks better than lasered glass (in my opinion), though there are many reasons lasering is pre- ferred, such as being much faster. What to Consider with WOOD Chuck Donaldson, Antares Inc. Wood can be rotary engraved, but ranges from very soft (pine, balsa, etc.) to extremely hard (walnut, ash, etc.). Order tools for the specific materials for best results. In general, for harder material and/or the deeper you cut, feed rates should be slowed and the number of passes should be increased.
