The number above represents how many steps I took during the three days I walked this year's Elkhart Open House Week. Needless to say, I covered a lot of ground. Thankfully, I didn't have to try to cover the entire event myself. Thanks to Managing Editor Travis O. Pryor and Elkhart-based writer Steve Bibler, we were able to split up cov- erage of the various RV manufacturers to be able to spend a bit more time with individual exhibitors. In meeting with reps for several RV makers, there was one takeaway that stood out to the RV PRO edit team: The increased emphasis companies placed upon quality construction. This included stepping up their pre-delivery inspection process and promoting their warranty coverages as a way to emphasize they stand behind what they build. Just a few examples include: • Forest River's new East to West towables division (this month's cover story, beginning on page 60) is touting its deliberately streamlined production process designed to increase the quality of its RVs while reducing costs. • Heartland's highlighting of its new $5 million PDI facility. • New RV maker Black Series promotion of the quality construction it engineers and builds into its rugged travel trailers. • Newmar highlighting that Spartan chassis-equipped motorhomes in 2019 will come with an upgraded five-year warranty. • NeXus touting that it runs all its units through a comprehensive PDI process that it equates to a six-hour camping simulation. Whether these various construction and quality control initiatives result in an appreciably better product remains to be seen. Still, the very fact that so many RV makers are actively promoting the quality of their units – rather than simply spot- lighting how many slides a model has or talking up a unit's eye-catching paint job – seems to be a promising development. For highlights from Open House Week, please be sure to read "2019 Best of Show RVs" (starting on page 10) spotlighting 20 standout RVs from the event, as well as the "Elkhart Open House Week Field Notes" story (starting on page 50) for a broad overview of event trends and takeaways. VetsRoll Honors the Greatest Generation Over the years, RV PRO has profiled many RV-related charities doing wonderful work. Still, this month's feature on VetsRoll – a nonprofit that provides free RV/ bus trips to memorials in Washington, D.C., for World War II veterans – was pro- foundly moving for me, as the son of a World War II veteran and as someone who is deeply respectful of the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation. So, I hope you will check out that feature, starting on page 104, and if the organization's mission resonates with you, please consider making a small donation to the nonprofit, as I am doing.
