Creating a Family Feel Beyond the obvious family connections, Rowland says he wants the family feel to extend to his employees and customers. "Ultimately, our goal is to have everyone who walks through that door be a family member," he says. "That's why we call it American Family." Rowland says he tries to accomplish that goal by inviting all of his customers and their friends to go camping with him. Every fall, American Family RV stays at a campground in Virginia Beach. Last year, 400 people attended. With the new dealerships, he's planning a spring campout in the mountains. "I cater it, I hire bands; it's camaraderie," he says. "It's a blast." The event includes "tech talks" by RV manufacturers' representatives and Amer- ican Family RV technicians, plus children's activities. Rowland says he will even get up and sing for the kids. The dealership offers a free pop-up camper for the weekend to anyone with a military or first-responder ID. "It's a combination of all these things that give us the family feel that make us truly a family," he says. "It's the feel, the trust. You develop a family with your people, or they wouldn't continue to come to our campouts."
