"Customers can choose between our starter kit, which has sewer and water hoses, toilet paper and toilet chemicals, an electricity adaptor – everything they need to drive off the lot and directly to a campsite and set up. If they are experienced campers trading up, they can take the $50 gift certificate to our shop and buy additional accessories. Anything purchased at this time (with the gift certificate or not) is 20 percent off. "Our parts manager tracks people's requests all year long and if a few people ask for the same thing she will check those products out at a show and consider adding them to our inventory. This year we responded to requests for less expensive, all-in-one sewer hose kits by adding the Titan and Dominator brands. "Because pets are so important to people's lives and so many people are camping so they can travel with their pets, we added pet supplies this year. We carry glow-in-the-dark dog and cat food and water dishes. The glow keeps people from tripping over them in a confined space in the middle of the night. We also added all-natural chew toys made from hemp. "We are located in a massive 150-year-old barn, so, in addition to our 60- by 30-square-foot showroom and seven huge repair bays, we have three dedicated storage areas and a separate 60- by 20-square-foot parts and accessories store. "The most popular sellers are replacement hardware, sewer products, cleaners, and leveling blocks. And kids' toys. We have a great selection of camping-themed items such as coloring books, story books, and little toy campers with working wheels. "After the initial pick-up, the most common times for people to purchase is when something breaks, when sup- plies run low, and when people are upgrading. We encourage purchases year-round with seasonal discounts, coupons, and posters outlining the features and benefits of various products in our showroom. "As far as competition from Camping World, Wal-Mart, and Amazon, it exists, but it's not as bad as it might be. If someone asks for a price match, we do it, but not everyone is comfortable asking, so sometimes we don't get the chance. "On the other hand, our service department gets a lot of busi- ness fixing Camping World's mistakes. "Those places are all good for exposing new people to the world of camping and non-technical things like toilet paper can easily be purchased anywhere, but when you're replacing the circuit breaker in your refrigerator, you want someone with the technical know-how to do it right – and that's where we come in.
