DECEMBER 2018 THE SHOP 45 and the piece is block-sanded. It's then buffed to a brilliant shine with five different com- pounds and five different buffing wheels. Steering wheel restoration starts when a customer sends in a wheel with their name and phone number attached to it. It is inspected so the customer can be con- tacted with a price and due date. After approval, bad sections of the steering wheel rim are cut and ground away. It is repaired with a two-part indus- trial epoxy that adheres to the existing wheel. After the epoxy dries, the wheel is sanded and color is applied with a poly- urethane paint. Steering wheel restorations start at $250. Chrome work carries an additional charge. THE TRI-FIVE GUYS While Freund deals with vehicles ranging from Olds 4-4-2s to Corvettes and '41 Chevy trucks, the specialty of the house is custom restoration work on '55 through '57 Chevys. The shop is usually packed with a number of them in various stages of repair. In addition, in good weather, Mike, his son and his dad drive to work each day in a trio of outrageous Tri-Five Chevy gassers. Freund's shop is well-organized, but it's no Hot Rod TV set. There are several working-on-cars areas, as well as storage space for engines, other parts and future project cars. The Classic Plus Ltd. offices are decorated with model cars (including Chrysler 300s), rock & roll memorabilia, 1950s collectibles like restored jukeboxes and gas pumps and all those color photos of cars the shop has finished over the past 30 years. JOHN GUNNELL has been writing about classic cars since 1972. He is also the owner of Gunner's Great Garage in Manawa, Wisconsin. He owns 11 cars and seven motorcycles. Glitzy "Stardust" is an example of where Freund's going with builds these days. ProClassic hose is a perfect choice for shops that want high-quality performance plumbing that's lighter and easier to assemble than traditional braided steel hose. Features a lightweight nylon fiber outer braid with a CPE inner liner, with a maximum pressure rating of 350 PSI. Match with Russell's Full Flow hose ends and black AN adapters for the complete Russell Performance look.
