DECEMBER 2018 THE SHOP 65 "I worked hard and smarter than most people in the businesses I have been in." —Mark Cuban GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY If you don't already work with or cater to these popular platforms, now would be a good time to jump in and see if it doesn't make a difference in your existing business. Maybe lifted trucks are your specialty and you don't see why Jeeps are all that. Besides, you say, there are already too many dealers and installers that are building Jeeps, so why should you invest your time and money to go after this crowd, potentially alienating some truck owners that are a good portion of your clientele? The same could be said for Toyotas, and maybe they are not seen in your part of the country as a viable alternative to a Ford, Chevy or Ram pickup. However, those resale numbers don't lie; they reflect what these vehicles have sold for, and they con- tinue to retain more of their value than their competitors, as more buyers across the board want them. The short answer is that it makes dol- lars and sense. Any number of Jeep or Toyota builds take the same amount of time that it takes to build one straight- axle lifted truck. Expanding who you are and what you do can't hurt, and it presents a vision of greater activity if you have more vehicles going through your facility instead of having a single truck tying up your lift or taking up floor space when lots of custom fabrication needs to be done. "Hire salespeople who are really smart problem-solvers, but lack courage, hunger and competitiveness, and your company will go out of business." —Ben Horowitz "I truly believe that you can't be a successful business unless there are hiccups. That Amer- ican mentality of picking yourself up, brushing your shoulders off, and then really going for it makes you 100 times stronger and smarter." —Zac Posen JASON SAKURAI heads up Roadhouse Marketing, a mar- keting, advertising and sales solutions firm dedicated to the automotive aftermarket.
