The worldwide Motorsport Industry Association trade group went on the offensive this fall, urging thousands of motorsports businesses, participants and fans across the European Union to write to their Members of European Parliament (MEPs) and local governments to demand changes to a proposed new EU Motor Insurance Directive that it believes could cause all motorsport activities to become illegal in the EU. This month, MEPs and representatives of EU governments will vote on the newly revised (May 2018) Motor Insurance Directive from the European Commission, MIA explains. The text, unless amended, threatens the future of tens of thousands of jobs and motorsport businesses across the EU, the group contends. "This is a genuine, serious threat to all EU motorsport. No one involved in motorsport—companies, employers and organizations—can afford to ignore this," says Chris Aylett, MIA CEO. "If the new EU MID is unchanged, the unintended consequence of this legislation would mean the end of a sport enjoyed by millions, close down tens of thousands of motorsport-related businesses and destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs across the EU. This sounds unbelievable, but unfortunately it will happen if we fail to act." The directive review follows the Vnuk ruling made by the Court of Justice of the European Union in September 2014, which MIA explains requires all EU Member States to ensure compulsory unlimited third-party liability insurance is carried by anyone using any form of motorized transportation in any location—including motorsports. The specialist insurance market for EU motorsport has told the MIA and European Commission that no insurance is or will be available that meets the compulsory demands. "So, when this new MID is put into the laws of each EU State, as no insurance is available, it will be illegal to compete in any motorsport," Aylett offers. To raise awareness, MIA, a global trade association for motorsport and high- performance engineering, launched a social media campaign urging all EU motor- sport companies and individuals to contact their local government and MEPs, demanding the text of the MID be changed. The MIA website provided a template letter and relevant EU contacts, and the group activated an extensive social media campaign on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Updates are available at www.the-mia.com/VNUK, and results of the vote will be reported via THE SHOP's website and daily eNewsletter.
