20 THE SHOP FEBRUARY 2019 The stands are packed at all the events we have attended." AN EVOLVING SPORT These manufacturers' definitions show that no-prep drag racing is an evolving sport. As such, the professional community has a chance to help shape it into a viable, long- term market. "The misconception is that no-prep drag racing would root deeper into illegal street racing, which as a whole the performance aftermarket industry does not support or recognize as a viable application for its products," Raymond says. "Too many kids were pushing safety to the side for the thrill of the game and a shortcut to the finish line." In response, no-prep classes have been built into sanctioned and legal drag racing organizations in an effort to create a safe environment for weekend warriors who want to exercise their passion within class rules and guidelines. NO-PREP PARTS Manufacturers list their hottest products for no-prep drag racing applications. "Our ZP Performance brand is all about no- prep racing—so much so that ZP stands for Zero Prep. Our hottest product right now is the Honda Civic steering column, but we also offer ultra-lightweight, easy-to-install racing columns for the Ford Mustang. We also have our five- and six-bolt Quick Release Steering Hubs (QRSH) that accommodate most common steering wheels." Chase Smith ididit LLC "I'd have to say our Legacy line is what I'm personally most proud of. It will include our new 0.937 keyed lifters and our rocker systems that eliminate offset in rockers." Louis Floquet Crower Cams "At the end of 2018 we had a lot of the big-tired racers like Mike Murillo, No Prep Kings champion Birdman, Ryan Martin and Daddy Dave switching over to part #3189 and our Big Bubba tires. I see more switching in 2019." Tom Kundrik Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels "We have a solid-hub cerametallic twin- and triple-disc clutch that serves well for both daily driving as well as any drag racing." Geoffrey M. Gerko Mantic Clutch USA "Our 5-gallon-per-minute brushless fuel pump along with our mechanical spur gear pumps are very popular in the big tire classes." Jeff Stacy Aeromotive Inc. "Our Exhaust division offers long-tube race headers specifically designed for closed course competition. Both our JBA Performance Exhaust and Doug's Headers brands cover applications from the 1950s through the cur- rent list of late-model muscle cars. Also, stroll through the pits of any racetrack and you won't be able to miss the many PerTronix Flame-Thrower distributors and coils. Race- only HEI and Ignitor III versions are the go-to choice for many drag racers. Also, the current PerTronix CD Ignition Box, the Digital HP Mobile, gives racers three rev limits." Greg Raymond PerTronix Performance Brands Prepping for the No-Prep Crowd To properly serve the no-prep crowd, make your shop's presence known in your local com- munity. Attend your local car shows and get involved in any events that your local drag strip is hosting. This is where you are going to meet the racers.
