EDITORS NOTE: 10 • RV PRO • January 2019 rv-pro.com I n late 2018, the U.S. International Trade Commission made permanent anti-dumping duties on Chinese aluminum sheet metal following an earlier determination that domestic alu- minum producers were being unfairly harmed by artificially reduced costs of the metal resulting from Chinese subsidies. Critics of China's trade policies rightly point out that the country often doesn't play fair, to the detriment of U.S. compa- nies. Clearly, the U.S. can't turn a blind eye to those practices. At the same time, the RV Industry Association and other business groups pointed out in testimony before the ITC that anti-dumping duties ranging from 40 to 50 percent, combined with countervailing duties of 46 to 116 percent, are "draco- nian" and unfairly penalize downstream users of aluminum, including RV manufacturers and suppliers. In fact, even manufacturers that strictly rely on domestic aluminum have seen their costs increase by 25 to 45 per- cent, according to RVIA. As of mid-December, there were some hopeful signs that leaders in Washington, D.C., and Beijing were working toward some sort of compromise. The issue is com- plex, so it's unlikely a fix will come quickly or easily. Still, a solution that safeguards America's interests needs to be found, because – make no mistake about it – these costs that OEMs and suppliers are paying are ulti- mately going to get passed along to customers. And while RVers may love the latest and greatest models, those RVs are still very much discretionary purchases. As we enter a new year, it might not hurt to remind your congressman or senator of this. The 2019 Guide: Still Big, Even Better You likely noticed right away that this is a BIG issue, even for RV PRO. Not only that, but each one has been accu- rately cross-referenced in our Product Category section, where hundreds of listings show you who is carrying what types of products or offering what kinds of services. No doubt you will want to keep this issue on your desk throughout the new year as a resource at the ready.
