AUGUST 2018 THE SHOP 27 Auto Repair is like walking into a time capsule back to the repair shops of the 1970s. There are dozens of coffee cans filled with parts: rusted, new and every- thing in between. Engine blocks, heads, wires and wire harnesses are everywhere, and there are even some surfboards hanging from the rafters along with original body panels and trim pieces. Look closely, in fact, and you'll even find a camper that is used for storage in the back of the shop. But, what would you expect from a couple of long-haired hippies fixing air-cooled clas- sics? Staggs, who is proud of the fact that he has never lived away from the Southern California beaches (having been raised in Long Beach, Seal Beach, Newport and living in San Clemente since high school), calls himself a proud hippie and shows absolutely no signs of pretension. Another throwback to the '70s is the way that Staggs and Sink treat their customers—more like friends and family than sources of income. And, while you can find a couple of customers hanging out on a typical Friday afternoon, there is one day that is special to this com- munity of 356 owners: the 356th day of the year. Smack in the middle of the Christmas holiday season, that's the day that Staggs and friends have held their 356th day of the year barbecue for approximately the last 19 years. Mo re t h a n 1 0 0 v e h i c l e s , including dozens of 356s along with other Porsche and VW models, line Calle Valle in San Clemente to get together, talk Porsches and enjoy a happy December day with Jack Staggs.
