Maybe an electronics retailer that also installs running boards and steps? Unlike many industries, there's no set product inven- tory that works for every specialty automotive after- market outlet. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Regional trends, customer preferences and even employee skill sets affect the parts mix and service offerings of every shop. What is the same everywhere is that customers tend to remain loyal to businesses that do quality work, charge fair prices and treat people right. And the more you do those things, the more you'll find clients who ask about special projects—be it the race engine customer who wants you to install a cat-back system on his tow vehicle, or the back-up camera buyer who requests a leather kit for her daughter's new car. When those situations arise, it's nice to have a place to find products you might not normally deal with. The 2018 SHOP Guide is that place. This issue includes contact information listings for more than 500 industry suppliers, as well as product and service categories that cover it all, from grilles to exhaust tips. What's more, these are companies we've worked with and know carry the parts that professionals use and trust. We call them Recognized Industry Suppliers, and the idea is to save you time (and therefore money) by connecting you directly with businesses that understand what it takes to properly serve the aftermarket. So-called buyer's guides have been a staple in our industry for decades, and even with Google and the internet, they are still popular today—mainly because they can quickly direct you to what you need, when you need it, without a hassle. There are also shop owners who simply skim through the listings, looking for new profit centers. This is the issue to keep handy all year long so you're ready when that next surprise order walks in the door. There's also an online version available at ts.nbmguide.com if you prefer searching on a computer or phone. Diversifying can be a great way to add profits and even out workflow, so get to work expanding your horizons. It's always a good time to mix things up.
