Although Pete Lumpkins had never laid a piece of vinyl until that class, he signed up for the advanced installer training and learned everything he needed to know to launch his business. Now with the knowledge they needed to launch their wrap business, the Lumpkins rented a 1,500-square-foot, climate- controlled garage space with a bay door and office and started St. Augustine Vehicle Wraps. But even with the new business venture, Pete Lumpkins didn't give up his government job, and Ashley Lumpkins continued working as an occupational therapist. This meant a lot of 2 a.m. installation jobs, but it allowed St. Augustine Vehicle Wraps to start off on a stronger financial foot, Ashley Lumpkin says. "We were working around the clock nonstop because we didn't want to take on any debt and wanted the business to be successful before Pete left his benefitted job of 25 years," Ashley Lumpkins says. "Our hours were crazy, and we spent a lot of nights and weekends installing wraps." While the constant hours were certainly a grind, Ashley Lumpkins believes taking a fiscally conservative approach helped St. Augustine Vehicle Wraps survive those early years. The Lumpkins started St. Augustine Vehicle Wraps using only their savings and the safety net of their previous careers. "We lived off what we were already making, and that allowed us to take the money we earned and reinvest it into our business," Ashley Lumpkins says.
