50 a-e-mag.com • A&E MID-MAY 2019 F ew things are as striking as light dancing off the facets of an optical crystal ornament. But when it finds a design deeply carved into the back of that same ornament, the light fills the design and radiates a magical glow from within. Add a bit of a personal touch and a lifetime treasure emerges. Here is a brief discussion of the method I use for producing these popular gifts. MATERIALS NEEDED: • Optical crystal ornament blank • 4 mil vinyl resist material, or a pre-cut stencil • Exacto knife with a #14 blade • Masking tape • Abrasive etching equipment • Pencil and carbon paper (optional) ARTWORK STEPS: 1 I typically start with getting per- sonal, learning a bit about the intended recipient, what is closest to their heart, and then start a search. I love working from original art but do not draw well, so I often use online How to Sandcarve an Optical Crystal Ornament By Wren H. George, WrenSong Creations sources for clipart or vector art, being aware of copyright restrictions. Another option is to search out pre-cut stencils to purchase. There is an absolute wealth of designs in the portfolios that often come with person- alization ideas. Purchasing from these artisans is a great way to simplify your work and avoid many problems. A simple design can be hand cut, but remember the crystal scratches easily. 2 For the "McKenna" ornament in the photograph, I scanned the design from an image in a book of poetry into my design software, made some adjustments, sized to fit the available space, added the name using the text options, and sent it to my plotter to create my own pre-cut stencil. Add a bit of transfer tape to the face, and I'm ready to go. PROCESS STEPS: 1 Protecting the face of the ornament is my first concern. Masking tape or a bit of transfer tape works well and must be applied before I do anything else. How-To/Tutorial
