48 • RV PRO • May 2019 rv-pro.com D E A L E R S T here's something special about a family-owned business that has thrived for six decades and is being taken up by a third generation. Exit 1 RV, outside the town of Fair Haven, Vt., has been in the Holzworth family for 33 of its 60 years, and co-owner Cris Holzworth is proud to describe his approach to life and to business as "old school." "Our philosophy hasn't really changed. We try to be a service organization that also sells campers," he says. "If the economy went totally south, I'd stop selling campers and just do service, and we'd be fine." The Holzworth family acquired the business in 1986 from its original owner, Roy Boardman. He started Boardman Sales and Service in 1959 just half a mile away from the dealer- ship's current location, selling cars and pop-up trailers. When Boardman dropped automobiles from his dealership, he renamed it Boardman RV Center. Meanwhile, Cris Holzworth's parents, Rod and Pat Holzworth, had bought a campground a few miles up the road from Boardman RV Center in 1971. Rod Holzworth got to know Boardman during the frequent visits the RV dealer made to the campground to work on guests' campers. When the Holzworths sold the campground in 1985, Rod Holzworth went to work for Boardman and bought the dealership the next year, according to Zack Holzworth, Cris Holzworth's son and the third generation of Holzworths to enter the business. The Vermont dealership, now in its third generation of family ownership, prospers in part thanks to delivering on its service promises and its personal connections with customers.
