60 THE SHOP JULY 2019 JULY 2019 PRECISION ENGINE EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first in a four-part series following the build of a 428-ci, 631-hp GM LS engine that was raffled off at the 2018 PRI Show in Indianapolis. This build is yet another variation based on the popular GM LS platform. Rather than using any GM OEM components, it features all performance aftermarket items, including a Dart block, AFR cylinder heads, SCAT crank and rods, ICON pistons, Holley induction, MSD ignition, Harland Sharp shaft rockers and more. Labeled the Nighthawk II LS, this build features a 4.130-inch bore coupled with a 4.000-inch stroke, for a whopping 428 ci. My shop built this engine for AERA Engine Builders Association and it was raffled off as a prize during the 2018 PRI Show in Indianapolis. This article provides the details involved during design, prepara- tion and assembly. We chose an all-black appearance scheme for this build, which helps you understand why we named it Nighthawk. BUILDING THE Nighthawk II LS As a raffle prize at the 2018 PRI Show, this all-black beauty needed to have it all. By Mike Mavrigian Our Nighthawk II LS build steps up the game by featuring an increase in displacement to 428 ci, along with the massive flow of AFR Mongoose LS3 heads and Holley Sniper EFI. The billet air cleaner lid was anodized by Luke Engineering and CNC- etched by Fusion of Ideas. 60 THE SHOP JULY 2019 Vintage Engines p.68 Engine Products p.74
