Using a light source to give us that illusion greatly increased the depth to the elephant. We created shadow tones to overlay the colors and dull out some areas to give a more natural look. These tones would serve to influence highs and lows in the colors. About 50% gray allowed for some transparency as it layered over the color in the final schematic to defuse the shadow areas which showed a significant change in the opacities. Another tone knocks out other areas and the black line removes all color from those areas to give a recess. The tones work effectively to add to the illusion by defining the shape of the head. The tones also help in some of the more notable crevices under the eyes and in the trunk. We really wanted to feel those nuances of the skin, and later we added some texture under these areas for a beautiful tactile effect. Going one step further in our creativity, we wanted a sense of that tribalism to our el- ephant. We grabbed some tribal and tattoo graphics from our archives and arranged them to follow some of the contours that occur in the physiology of this magnificent animal. This was most effective during the white printer construction. For environmental elements in the jungle, some well-placed palm leaves and a little spot in the brush for his exit were added. While constructing, we had each color splash on a separate layer so they wouldn't mix until we were ready to flatten for the final process of separations. Levels of colors were more solid in specific areas than others and some had a variety to get secondary color mixes.
