For father-daughter duo David and Ashley Kirchner, co-owners of Print Crazee, the focus has been as much on customer service as it has been on making the shop a place where employees enjoy spending their days. Initially, the business specialized in services like wide-format printing, vehicle wraps, graphic design, and personalized business supplies. They've since brought on screen printing and embroidery to pair decorated apparel with these services. "We wanted to be a one-stop shop for people's businesses," says Ashley. The company originally offered heat-printed apparel, but a jump in volume made screen printing much more practical. Print Crazee recently added a second location in Breese, Illinois, but even with the growth, David points out that the core values of the business remain the same. "We're a family of businesspeople here," states David. After maintaining series of successful companies with other family members, David started the company as a place where Ashley's graphic design and business skills could flourish while co-managing the operation. In addition to founding the company with family roots, Print Crazee made it a point to fill the company ranks with likeminded people and pay those employees a wage that reduced attrition and created a posi- tive work environment. "From part-time people to full-time people, everybody's paid a good wage," he says. David adds that the staff also enjoy benefits and vacation packages not often seen in a traditional screen-printing shop. In addition to paying close attention to employees' needs, the Kirchners focus on the small- to-medium sized B2B market. Being a go-to resource for those businesses and having a home base in a rural area helps Print Crazee continue build a strong lineup of clients. "There's no other business in our area like us," Ashley points out. Rather than drive to bigger cities like Carbondale, Illinois or St. Louis, the senior Kirchner says those local small-town customers come to them for everything from graphic and logo design to decorated shirts and hats. Other measures like ceiling fans to keep utility costs down, upgraded LED lighting, solar power, and even a dedicated recycling plan reflect Print Crazee's efforts to invest in the environment both inside and out. "The en- vironment is not an expense to maintain, it's an investment," adds Ashley. David sums up the company's business model with the phrase, "doing well by do- ing good." With an increase in volume and growth, including new e-commerce sites launching this year, that balanced model seems to suit Print Crazee well.
