W hen your grandfather owns the business and you share the name that's on the big sign out front, there might be some pressure to live up to all of that. But whenever Dave Carter & Associates Vice President David J. Carter III runs into a situation he might not know how to handle, he always knows he can turn to owner Dave Carter for some common sense advice. "I find the best thing about having a family member working with you is they tend to be that person you can turn to for guidance," he says. "They are more than willing to tell you what they feel is truly the best decision and not what you want to hear. They become your best mentor because they will challenge you to become a better person on a multitude of levels and make tomorrow better." David says it is rewarding to talk with longtime customers and hear stories about his father's and grandfather's accomplishments and how they made the family name familiar in distribution circles. "(It) makes me proud to work in an industry that has not forgotten that the human element and relationship are still a top priority and not just the bottom line," he says. David says the normal work/life boundaries that most people enjoy tend to disappear when working for a family business. And he acknowledges that higher expectations come with bearing the family name. But working for his grandfather means he doesn't just have a boss, but has someone who is looking out for his best interests and for the company future. "The great thing about reporting to him is that he is willing to spend time mentoring me to think outside the box when it comes to approaching challenges and finding the solutions," David says.
