A&E AUGUST 2019 • 41 the night away and want to let the "dogs out" but don't want to be barefoot. Let's not forget universities, especially sororities and fraternities. When it comes to successfully selling, the key is finding a specific product without a ton of competition. I believe a sublimated flip-flop fits in that category. When you think about your customer base, think about what appeals to them — most would say family, kids, vaca- tions, or maybe they own a business. Have a sample of a business logo or have a family of Papa, Mama, and Baby Bear flip-flops in your store. TRANSFROM YOUR PAIR OF SUBLIMATED SANDALS If you want to take it to a whole other level and price point, add some metallic sequins to make your flip-flop designs fes- tive. Glue satin ribbon to the straps then sew on cascading shiny sequins. Vary your metallic or sequins to make these sandals really pop. Though personalized sublimated flip-flops are sure to get your customers' attention, imagine when you add a unique or custom design and take "nice" to "fabulous." There are so many creative ways to dress-up a sub- limated flip-flop with a glue gun and some scrap material you might have laying around. Here are a few examples: • With just a few stitches and a bit of glue, you can create a stylish pair of sling-back sandals. As a bonus, trading out flip-flops' usual plastic band for a bit of festive stretch fabric makes for more comfortable footwear. Incorpo- rate braided strips of stretch knit or sublimate some twill polyester mate- rial to use as the sandal straps. This is a no-sew option that can be made in a matter of minutes. Search on You- Tube for the how-tos of dressing up flip-flops, as there are many online. • Get artsy with sublimation Artesprix markers to decorate the soles and reg- ular permanent markers for the straps of otherwise-unnoticeable flip-flops. This is an excellent option for kids, too, as there is no sewing with needles or hot glue necessary. Some cute sayings to sublimate on flip-flops: • "Some of the best memories are made in flip-flops." • "Flip-flops: even if you can't vacay, your toes can." • "It's a flip-flop kind of day." • "I'm not just a summer kinda' girl, I'm a flip-flop kinda' girl." • "Summer is always good for lazy days and flip-flops." HOW TO SUBLIMATE FLIP-FLOPS Here are the essential tools you need to get started with creating and selling flip-flops: • Design image and template (Photo- shop, Corel, Inkscape) • Sublimation transfer • Sublimatable flip-flops • Lint roller • Repositionable spray or heat tape • Flip-flop strap assembly tool (not required but helpful) • Needle nose pliers (if you don't have the assembly tool) Design Essentials When designing for flip-flops, it is best to bring in a template, especially when doing names, monograms, or anything that requires centering. Step One: In this example, I added a pattern to my fill color.
