A t a recent trade show, I met a home- based awards, promotional prod- ucts, and custom gift shop owner who expressed her frustration at having to constantly re-validate her business when- ever it applied for a loan, sought credit terms from suppliers, and/or tried to garner respect when courting a brick-and-mortar prospective client. Small Business Administration (SBA: www.sba.gov) studies have shown that nearly half of all U.S. businesses are home- based, and 96.5% of them had gross receipts less than $100,000, which may contribute to the way other companies and customers regard (or disregard) them. So, what can an aspiring business-owning mogul do to help grow a fledgling enterprise? Maybe it's time to get serious about "playing with the pros" and start acting like one.
