The style used is called Chibi, a Japanese slang word describing something short. After some referencing, we produced a series of mini hero drawings. Even though Captain America wasn't Lee's concept, he is a comic icon, so we used his shield to hold the elements together. One challenge was getting the details of each figure to work in an action pose as each figure had short appendages and big heads. Other challenges were creating reflective qualities for Iron Man's armor, lightning for Thor's hammer, and giving life to Dr. Strange's cloak with dramatic folds and shadows. And, finally, The Hulk would need to show strength by lifting the en- tirety of the design. The odd man out was Deadpool, which was not one of Lee's cre- ations, but was included in the lineup per the client's request. We classically have him injecting himself where he isn't wanted and ripping through the fabric to make an appearance. After scanning our drawings and open- ing them in Adobe Illustrator, we did some path work using the Bezier Curve Tool and assorted Brush Effects for the comic black line with thick and thin lines. The fills and brushed pieces worked together in black and white as color would be added later. We had eight central figures to black line, so we used Illustrator and Photoshop in unison. The final print would go on black, but our goal was to make the design pop off the shirt. We used each color for at least two different tones and a range for the col- oring of the heroes. We needed to keep our colors, screens, and budget down to only six, so some of the signature colors were adjusted. The black line compartmental- ized the areas for fill, so it made it easy to select. The black would be the shirt and not printed, so most of the ink colors fell back naturally. However, because of the white in our gray, we reduced its density to get a darker value. The black came from our shirt so we had to reduce the white in the gray to get a darker value. As usual, we started with pencil drafts of our characters. We used each color for at least two different tones and a range for the coloring of the heroes. We needed to keep our colors and screens down to six, so some of the signature colors were adjusted.
