And as its product line expands, the company continues to invest heavily in addi- tional resources to bolster support for after- market customers in the form of training, marketing and sponsorships. Metra is also a regular on the trade show floor—from CES and IBEX to PRI and AIMExpo. "Last year, we had at least 30 SEMA builds featuring our products. This year, we're expanding our presence with two booths, one of which will be in the dedicated pow- ersports section," says Jason Anderson, VP of product research and development for Metra's 12-volt brands. The company focuses on the grassroots level, sponsoring ATV, UTV and Jeep builds for its aftermarket customers. "By donating product or sponsoring shop builds, our customers gain a true demo vehicle to show off what their shop and our brand can really do," Anderson explains. "We want that demo vehicle front and center at local events and car shows like Jeep Beach—that's what gets consumers talking." For shops near the coastline or other bodies of water such as lakes and rivers, there has been a surge in personal watercraft sales to consider as a business opportunity. "Watersports are still rolling. We have an influx of consumers buying boats and wave runners, as well as new models on the market to keep things interesting," says Bryan Grigsby, powersports national sales manager for Driven Performance, as well as an off-road powersports enthusiast and race team manager with more than 20 years of experience. "People are out using them as a result of a growing economy—consumers are still spending." That spending extends itself to the after- market and products such as high-end audio systems, custom lighting and more. In addition to a spike in watersports, Grigsby says dealers and automotive shops should follow trends in OE electrification as well. According to Kelley Blue Book, Polaris secured 53% of all side-by-side web searches from Jan. 1-April 26, 2019. In second place was Can-Am with 11%, followed by Yamaha 9% and Kawasaki 8%. Honda and John Deere both secured 5% of the total SXS searches, with Arctic Cat 3%, Kubota 2%, CFMOTO 1% and Cub Cadet 1% also appearing in the top 10. The following data breakdown is cour- tesy of Powersports Business and Kelley Blue Book: Nine of the top 10 sport segment SXSs are manufactured by Polaris. Last year, Polaris swept this category. All of the top 10 sport segment utility vehicles are under 10 years old, with the exception of the 2008 Polaris Ranger RZR 800. For 2019 year-to- date, the 2017 Polaris RZR XP 1000 EPS garnered 2% more KBB.com traffic to take the No. 1 spot from the perennial favorite, the 2008 Polaris Ranger RZR 800. Can-Am dominated the top 10 non-Polaris sport segment side-by-sides list. Eight of the top 10 are Can-Am vehicles, including five from the Maverick series and three Com- manders. Only six of the top 10 non-Polaris sport segment utility vehicles were in the top 10 a year ago. Newcomers to the list are the 2017 Yamaha YXZ1000R SS and the three Can-Am Commander models. Eight of the top 10 model-year 2018 sport segment side-by-sides were manufactured by Polaris. The RZR XP 1000 has been the top 1-year- old sport segment side-by-side for the past three years. Eight of the top 10 1-year-old sport segment side-by-sides appeared in the top 10 a year ago, in their model-year 2017 iteration. Newcomers to the top 10 this year were the 2018 Kawasaki Teryx4 LE and the 2018 Polaris RZR S4 900 EPS. Polaris still has a sizeable lead over all the other manufacturers in KBB.com web traffic for side-by-sides. For 2019 year-to- date, Polaris garnered 52.8% of KBB.com traffic for side-by-sides, down from 54% a year ago. For most manufacturers, the share of KBB.com traffic has remained static compared to a year ago, although Honda has overtaken John Deere.
