64 THE SHOP OCTOBER 2019 W hen traveling to a fun- filled destination via the family vehicle, every square foot of interior space becomes extremely valuable. Having an extra way to carry cargo on your rooftop can be a blessing on long trips. But just having rooftop storage is far from the only answer to a successful excur- sion and arriving in a safe and stress-free state of mind. The need for this cargo space can be rather lucrative for shops that take the time to learn the business of racks and hauling solutions. Much design work and testing has gone into the art of rooftop cargo travel. There are questions that need to be answered when considering the options available, such as: What is the load capacity of the vehicle and which designs suit your cus- tomer's needs? For the most part, choosing between the different types of rooftop carriers depends on gear and personal preference. For example, if drivers are carrying lug- gage, golf clubs or skis that they want to remain secure, dry and clean, a cargo box is their best bet. If, however, they have camping supplies that aren't particularly valuable or fragile, they can use a cargo bag. And if they don't have a specific applica- tion in mind— they just know they need more cargo space—try a basket: It's relatively low-profile and you can offer accessories, tie-downs and even a cargo bag for it to increase add-on sales. The start of all rooftop cargo carriers, regardless of if it will be accompanied by a basket, a cargo box, a bike rack or a plat- form, is the rack itself. The rack consists of at least four feet or towers that support the crossbars. Several SUVs on the market today come equipped with mounting points as standard features. They offer security, storage capac- ity and weather protection. Cargo baskets don't offer the same level of protection as a cargo box, but they will get cargo to where it's going. Their open design also won't limit the height of the cargo, so they are great for larger lug- gage, coolers or other oversized items.
