78 THE SHOP OCTOBER 2019 \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ AFTERMARKET ALLEY to over 212 degrees in a matter of seconds. This can be enough to permanently mar the mobile device surface or inflict first- degree skin burns. Luckily, there is protection built into Qi to make sure the only thing that can charge is the smartphone. Some aftermarket units excel at this by showing different colors to alert the user. ON THE DASH You can also do Qi wireless charging on the dashboard. This can really make sense for delivery drivers or ride-sharing drivers who use their smartphones for directions and instructions on their next fare. Scosche Magic Mount Charge3 found a way to make wireless charging a little bit cooler (literally) with the design of its unit. It is available in a vehicle vent mount, which is popular because they are quick and easy to install, remove and transfer from vehicle to vehicle. Until now they had one major draw- back—blocking airflow from a vehicle's vent. The Scosche designers came up with a unique design that features an articulated swingarm to allow unimpeded airflow from the vehicle's vents. The charging head independently rotates 360 degrees with a light-but-distinct dial- like feel, free of cables and other impedi- ments, so the device can be viewed from any angle. The articulated swing arm offers even more positioning options, including the ability to move the phone completely away from the vent while still anchored. Certified by the WPC, the charger delivers up to 10 watts of charge, supporting Apple and Samsung Fast Charge. It provides the extra safety protection of Foreign Object Detection, which prevents charging if something other than a Qi-enabled device is placed on the charging head. There is also an ambient light-sensing LED that illuminates blue for normal charging and red for foreign object detection. When held in place by the Magic Mount Charge3's 100% device-safe neodymium magnets, a thermal management gap is created between the phone and the Qi- charging head. This gap allows heated air to disperse and be replaced by cooler air during charging, which is safer for the life of the device's battery, as well as the device itself. The Scosche charging mount is built from premium materials. The articulating rotating swing-arm and the 360-degree rotating charging head deliver a smooth- yet-tactile feedback experience for the cus- tomer as they adjust the smartphone.
