S I G N & D I G I T A L G R A P H I C S • November 2019 • 19 • All elements requiring paint are prepped and painted, vinyl is applied, acrylic is attached • Sign components are joined or disassem- bled as necessary for transport to the install site • Sign support pipes, lumber for setting pipe, rebar and other installation equipment is loaded onto the transport vehicle and secured. • The route to be used for transport of the sign is looked at again to verify if there are any new obstacles to avoid, construction zones or new overhead power lines that could pose a problem. • Concrete trucks, and or any special equip- ment needed for the install is confirmed ahead of time. Verification that they will be at the job site on install day should happen five days prior to install day, then confirmation two days before, and finally the morning of the install. • Sign is transported to the job site where it will be installed. • Installation takes place—support pipes are set in concrete. • Once concrete is set, the sign cabinets are installed and the customer is thrilled, happy and so satisfied that they cut you a check for the bal- ance right there on the spot, and throw in an extra $100 as a tip for you for handling it so well. In conclusion... from a 30,000-foot view, that is how to plan the process for fabricating and installing an electric monument sign. Are there a few unique or custom steps that might be required that I don't have listed? Absolutely, because each project has its own set of chal- lenges. The process you create for your company is really up to the needs of your customer… do they need to approve every step and every altera- tion, or do they trust your team? Working with larger corporate accounts forces you to tighten up your process to fit their requirements, but working with smaller businesses allows you to be much more flexible and accommodating. Your process should satisfy and address the needs of the customer, and the needs of your bottom line. Recognizing and embracing these key differ- ences will help you put together a process that never leaves you or your customer in a bind. But, having a team of dedicated employees who really care about their work is absolutely, 100% mandatory if you want to have a process that actually works. SDG This sign was huge! The overall height of the sign is 60' and engineering required the poles to be buried 17' deep. This sign was installed near the bay and water levels were very high. We were not prepared for this and when we started drilling, the hole collapsed. When this happens, it creates a bell type hole under the surface. We had to stop and move the sign back because we couldn't drill into the area that collapsed anymore. We had to make a choice to slurry drill to bury a sleeve around the outside of the hole. The sleeve was much cheaper, but risky. The risk is that the hole col- lapses before the sleeve can be dropped in place. The sleeve is basically a pole with the diameter of the hole. It stays below the surface and holds the sidewalls of the dirt in place while you pour the concrete and install the actual pole. The risk paid off and the sides of the hole held up long enough to drop the sleeve in.
