rv-pro.com November 2019 • RV PRO • 77 Wilmington, N.C., says that, among other things, the dealership has modified its compensation plan and created new employment positions. "We've just recently made the decision to go to a remote tablet system in the service department," Mirrielees says. "Each technician will have his own tablet to take orders and take photos of the things he's working on. There are a couple dealers in our group who have done this. Hearing that other group members have been successful with the time and money involved gives us a lot of comfort." Asked about changes he's made because of his 20 Group membership, Warren Patton, general manager of Byerly RV in St. Louis, just laughs before rattling off a long list of items, from standardizing accounting procedures to upgrading and growing the F&I depart- ment. In that area alone, he says the dealership has improved from worst to first in his 20 Group. "The last three years have been the best rev- enue and gross profits years we've ever had as a company, and I attribute that significantly to the changes we've made," Patton says. "I attribute that directly to our focus on the 20 Group and looking at where we could be if we had gotten ourselves in line with what we were seeing other people do." Asked their advice for other dealers who have weighed the advisability of joining a 20 Group, the general response is: Just do it. "It's one of the highest returns on investment you can make, both money- and time-wise," says Mirrielees. "You're dealing with people who are in the exact position you are and who have made all the same mistakes you've made. If your dealership doesn't have a board of directors, then your fellow 20 Group members become your board. Everybody in our group wants all the other members to succeed." Adds Wilkins, "If they want to grow their busi- ness, they'll look back 10 or 15 years from now and say it was the best thing they ever did." – K.
