The first reason is to protect the image. Signage or vehi- cle wraps that aren't laminated will fade more quickly. They also will get scuffed up more easily. Another reason to laminate is that lamination films come in quite a few dif- ferent finishes. The lamination process can change the look of the print by mak- ing it glossy, matte or textured. Graphics that are placed on countertops or floors need to be nonslip and scuff-resistant. Even when shops are printing to adhesive-backed vinyl, the material can be very thin and flimsy. Lamination can help add body to the print and make it easier to apply to any surface, including vehicle wraps, Pryor says. Other unique lamination films include anti-graffiti and dry erase. Sally Becker, vice president and co- owner of Coda, Inc. in Mahwah, New Jersey, says that no matter how technolo- gies have improved over the past five to 10 years, there is still demand for her company's laminating equipment and printable boards. "There's definitely a demand for this," she says. Many middle-sized companies went out of business or were bought out by larger entities during the economic downturn. But now, "we are seeing a resurgence of smaller companies com- ing back. That's nice to see that because it was tough there for this whole industry with the changes in technology and the economy." Because Coda is a small company itself, it is able to work closely with cus- tomers to do custom work. The company will build custom lamination equipment for specific company needs. Coda sells many laminators to fine art photographers, sign shops, school pho- tographers and museums that are doing things for display or signage. Coda is known for its tabletop lamina- tors that range in size from 14"-54", but it also has high production machines that can do cold lamination or a combination of both cold and hot lamination.
