36 THE SHOP JANUARY 2020 EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the third in a four-part series following the build of a 428-ci, 631-hp GM LS engine that was raffled off at the 2018 PRI Show in Indianapolis. Part I appeared in the July 2019 issue of THE SHOP magazine, and Part II in the October 2019 issue. BALANCER & TIMING POINTER Our Fluidampr balancer (fitted with a 7.25- inch pulley and a keyway) was interference- fit to the crank snout with a 0.0015-inch press fit (damper hub bore coated with anti-seize), with the hub drawing onto the snout very smoothly. Our crank snout mea- sured 1.482 inches, with the hub bore at 1.4805 inches. The COMP Cams front cover kit includes a timing pointer adapter base and a pair of 1/4 x 20 x 1-1/2-inch SHCS for mounting the base to the front cover (this allows the use of a big-block Chevy timing pointer). Due to my use of ARP 12-point 8mm stainless bolts on the front cover, the lower timing pointer adapter screw hits a cover bolt head. I shortened each timing pointer base screw by about 1/8-inch to ensure clearance. If you opt to use the SHCS sup- plied with the cover, you won't encounter this clearance issue. I simply prefer to use polished stainless 12-point ARP fasteners.
