14 THE SHOP FEBRUARY 2020 W e live in a jaded world when it comes to leadership. We have all heard the person who speaks incredible advice on team leadership, recites maxims on how to enable employees and then, in episodes of critical leadership practice, that same person fails horribly to lead by even the most fundamental measures. Too many people in significant leader- ship roles—from Army generals to gov- ernment officials to CEOs to non-profit executives—have talked a great leadership game, only to have their own leadership behavior fall woefully short of even the most basic expectations when they were needed the most. Everyone can personally point to leader- ship speeches, leadership books and leader- ship articles authored by supposedly great leaders that were later exposed as fabricators when their sordid behavior became exposed. Being a leader means more than flowery words, motivating speeches and reciting classic quotes from Gen. Patton. Effec- tive leaders truly care about leading with humility, compassion and a focus on results. They exhibit the mind of a teacher, the ethics of a child, a lack of fear to enact difficult decisions and a dedication to promote the team's results over their own career aspirations. True leaders focus on the actual exercise of leadership that concentrates on treating people with respect, achieving goals, inno- vating, improving, serving customers, teaching and developing people for more and greater challenges. A true leader focuses on action, open discussion, frontline pres- ence and proof of results. Any time a leader is celebrated more than those they lead, or any time a leader creates a cult of their infallible behavior, there are clear storms clouds of trouble and inconsistency. Here, then, are steps to becoming a more effective leader: Lead with Humility Humility is the constant and consistent recognition that you do not have all the information, insight and background to solve every problem of the organization on your own. A leader recognizes that others are essential to success. A leader's passion to explore, analyze and improve a situation with insight, contribu- tions and focus from others drives success. The choice a leader makes of how to handle mistakes in front of his or her team is a key component. Leaders that under- stand their mistakes and that learning from mistakes in front of a group is a sign of humility, honesty and fearlessness can better move their organizations forward. Lead with Proof Leaders who lead with open proof and clear evidence create waves of commitment in their organizations. Evidence-based leaders drive commit- ment because they are honest, open and clear concerning the results they want to achieve and the manner in which those achievements will be calculated.
