It's something of a rarity in today's ever-changing society, as trends (and in many cases, the businesses behind them) tend to come and go very quickly. What was popular 20, 10 or even five years ago fails to hold its relevance in the present-day. In business, this is evidenced by once-leading companies that have faded into near oblivion (think: Blockbuster Video, Radio Shack, Kmart and Toys "R" Us, to name just a few). While multiple factors contributed to the demise of the businesses mentioned above, a common denominator is that, at some point, they stopped being innovative and started to rest on their laurels. To put it more bluntly, they got lazy, thinking that what worked in the past would automatically carry them forward to future success as well. But business today moves at a rapid pace – and standing still is not an option. In this issue of RV PRO, we highlight two RV suppliers – LaVanture Products and Roadmaster Inc. – that recently reached milestone half-century anniversaries. I hope you'll be sure to read both insightful profiles to learn how these companies have evolved and grown over the years to stay at the top of their respective games. Speaking of staying current, also be sure to check out this month's dealer trends fea- ture, where we asked dealers from across the country how they are adapting to new buyer demographics. Dealers shared with us that a new generation of customers are impacting all facets of their businesses, including what they stock and how they market themselves. Of course, every RV business needs its own strategy for prospering in 2020, but I think the common denominator to being successful is to keep moving forward. Standing still is not an option. RV Aftermarket Remains Strong At the start of the NTP-STAG 2020 Expo luncheon, Bryan Fletcher, Valterra's vice president of sales and marketing, had one request: "Pat yourself on the back." Dealers in the crowded ballroom of the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center happily obliged, raising their hands in the air and giving themselves a pat. According to the slideshow presentation, the reason was clear: 2.4 million new RVs hit the road in the past eight years. "The dealer build has been down the last three or four years – and that could certainly lead you to think the year 2020 is going to be half empty," said Fletcher. "But the reality is, at the dealer and retail level, we've had an unbelievable growth in the install base in our market." With more than 9 million RVs on the road, Fletcher said the parts and service seg- ment should have plenty of reason to be happy in 2020, even if unit sales don't match previous market highs.
