rv-pro.com February 2020 • RV PRO • 87 Great Relationships Aren't Usually 'Equal' And relationships don't need to be equal, or 50/50, as many people might think. The better relationships I've had are not the ones I've been "half " in. The better relationships are those where I'm 100 percent engaged! And they don't have to equal in another sense. One of the reasons that I've been married to my wife, Carol, for 43 years, and in a business relationship with partner Tom King for 25 years, stems from a "complementary" nature to those relationships. (Carefully note the spelling there. It's not that I give them compliments.) Rather, it's that we complete the rela- tionship together. Both Tom and Carol bring their own elements to the relation- ship – and those are elements that would not be in my possession were it not for our shared relationship. Relationships Provide Access I'm a bit of a word wonk. My Mom was an English teacher and my Dad was a pastor. Both of them made their living with words. In many ways, I do, too. The word "relationship" comes from a Latin word meaning to "refer back". That is, to bring in something from elsewhere. Think of it like this: I can refer to something (or still better, someone else) to bring in a resource that I wouldn't have any other way. Through our relationships, we get to access other skills and valuable resources from those with whom we enjoy a good relationship. Think about it conversely: Where would you be without relationships? How much could you get done acting fully and completely on your own? Taking an even harder point of view: What would life be like if you lost some of your precious relationships? A close business associate? A personal friend? A family member? With that in mind, I come back to my friend and mentor, Bill. There is a particular pain that comes from the loss of a treasured relationship. The pros- pect of that pain should encourage us to foster and protect meaningful relation- ships. The value of those relationships in business cannot be overstated. Don't wait to pay attention to them until it's too late.
