MARCH 2020 THE SHOP 65 shop," says Sharp. "At the time, I was doing hot rods in my garage. I have a big garage and we were knocking them out and the phone kept ringing. I told my wife, 'Basi- cally I'm unemployed, but I have money coming in from my previous business.'" Her response? "She said, 'We can't live on that, it won't come in forever. Decide what you want to do.'" So, Sharp did. He opened a shop in Northglenn and things, as they say, went swimmingly right out of the gate. "I opened my first shop and it took off like crazy. The phone rang off the hook. We started doing classic cars and street rods. And then we started having car shows. That beefed it up." Sharp particularly prides himself on his attention to detail, making sure each job is meticulously crafted. "If someone wants a nice go-over on a Chevelle," he says, "we prep it and we can take the chrome, the windows and the glass off and blast it down. Then we take care of rust and bodywork and build up from there." Bodywork is a three-procedure process. "Once the metalwork's done, we'll do a coat of Feather Fill, which goes over the main bodywork. Then we block it—hand block it. Then we do a 2K primer over that and block it again with 180-grit sandpaper." After that, it's another 2K with primer. "We then seal it, basecoat and clearcoat it. When that's done, there are three stages of sanding on clearcoat—sand with 1,000-, then 1,500- and then 3,000-grit and then polish it. That's where you get the mirror finish." TOP PROJECTS Over the years the Sharps (sharpyscustom- have built plenty of projects they are proud of and for which they are widely known. "We have a vehicle we call Sharpy's Machine," says Sharp. "The name is based on the Burt Reynolds' movie Sharky's Machine. We also have a '26 Model T coupe that we chopped the top on. Also, our black '41 Willys Coupe has made a big, big splash around Denver. And then there's the '56 Buick Special we did. It's very well-known around town and we've won a lot of nationals with it." Although certain demographics might suggest a customer base that is well-heeled and/or retired, Sharpy's enjoys a working- class and repeat, loyal customer base.
