"It's really just a case of finding the right platform, PAM or some- thing else." Companies in the develop- ment side of the sign industry are working on augmented real- ity software solutions that bring in images for a signage system and create the result in a 3 D rendering through the use of digital tools. Currently, software pro- grams can be used for mockups to take measurements of a space or to figure out how to build a sign in dimension. Eventually, the programs will be able to show 3 D renderings in real time in an augmented reality solution by taking in their spatial relations. The software will be able to read the 3D environment and then render the sign image proportion- ally to the space in which it is being placed. Sign planners will be able to use the software to mock up different versions of a signage plan to present to the customer and show the results from various angles and views. That way customers will see what the sign poten- tially could look like, saving time and hastening their deci- sion process. AR Imbedded in Photos Spike by ikeGPS in Broomfield, Colorado, offers the Spike mobile measurement solution to save time and costs associated with collecting measurements for initial signage site surveys. Spike, one of the first solutions to target the signage industry with mobile solutions, has been available for the past five years and is in use by more than 5,000 sign shops worldwide. "Spike is designed so that anyone can learn how to use Spike correctly and be conducting initial site surveys in under an hour," says James Pardue, senior vice-president of sales for the Spike business unit at ike GPS. Users can measure a building, room, sign or other object by taking a photo with a smartphone or tablet. The Spike laser device and the Spike app work with the smartphone or tablet to capture real-time measurements that include areas, elevations, distances between two points IkeGPS in Broomfield, Colo., demonstrates how to use the Spike mobile app to measure a new sign.
