RV PRO: Do you plan to live in a truck camper forever? Gordon: No, but living full-time on the road is what we should be doing right now. One day I fully expect we'll settle in a home somewhere, but I hope there are exciting possibilities that present them- selves before that happens. We are always looking. RV PRO: What is the appeal of the truck camper and why is it growing? Gordon: Truck campers are the Jeeps of RVs. With the ability to go anywhere, camp anywhere, and tow anything, absolutely nothing offers the sheer versatility of a truck camper. With four-wheel drive, 490 watts of solar power, and 35-gallon holding tanks, we regularly camp off-grid for a week or more at a time – all while publishing Truck Camper Magazine via cellular internet. For us, the lifestyle is unbeatable. RV PRO: What's the solution to get more dealers selling truck campers? Gordon: I'm not sure we need or want more truck camper dealers. What we need is to strengthen and support the truck camper dealers we have. Truck campers require a level of truck camper dedi- cation, education, and expe- rience most RV dealers don't offer. Lucky for us, there are dozens of truck camper dealers who are passionate about the product. Let's focus there. R V P R O : W h y d o y o u believe the truck camper gets snubbed by the RV industry? Gordon: After Camper Coachman magazine shut down in the mid-'70s, no media actively championed truck campers until Truck Camper Magazine launched in 2007. D u r i n g t h a t 3 0 - y e a r period, truck campers were all but abandoned by the greater RV industry as manufacturers and dealers turned to tow- ables and motorhomes. That's where the industry snub for truck campers came from. So, how did truck campers come back? The internet. When the internet debuted and popularized in the late '90s, small communities of passionate truck campers came out of the woodwork and formed active commu- nities online. By the mid-2000s, the tr uck camper for ums on RV.net and NATCOA (North American Tr uck Camper Owners Assoc.iation) took off. That led to new truck camper rallies, mostly so these new internet friends could meet in person. Triggered by the internet, the forums and ral- lies were nothing less than a rebirth for truck campers. Truck Camper Magazine
