8 • A&E MAY 2020 THE METALLIC TOUCH Metal-marking techniques that any shop can employ By Cassie Green W hat comes to mind when you hear the term "metal marking"? Do you think of industrial metal nameplates or medical I.D. tags? Perhaps more common in the awards and personalization industry, you think of metal trophies, plaque plates, etc. It's also likely that your mind imagines an engraving of some sort on the metal plate — an MVP award perhaps, or maybe even employee of the month. While both laser and rotary engraving are popular ways to mark metal, the reality of today's customization world is that there are many options to decorate metal. From the brushed appearance of sandcarving to full-color effects, marking metal is a versa- tile option for any awards and personaliza- tion business. You might not be familiar with all the different methods avail- able, so let's explore. You might just find that your shop is capable of most of these options and you didn't even know it. When it comes to engraving and marking on metal, lasers are an effective and efficient tool. IMAGE COURTESY TROTEC LASER
