JULY 2020 THE SHOP 43 Note: In-person instruction and plenty of practice have long been the cornerstones of a successful course, complemented by supplemental written and video teaching aids. Now that the coronavirus has ruined everything, however, it's safe to say that every film training outlet is hard at work modifying their offerings in order to provide a safe-yet-effective learning experience. And then I'm ready to start working on customers' vehicles? Well, mostly. It's important to put those newfound skills to the test right away, but the average time to gain a professional level of proficiency can range anywhere from 60 days to six months. "After initial training, people start to feel a good comfort level after they complete approximately 20 installations," suggests Todd Bergman, vice president of automotive for Interwest Distribution and a 3M instructor. "The more you practice after you leave training, the faster you will become comfortable with your new skill set." Most outlets also offer advanced classes and/or refresher courses, plus updated information on major vehicle modifications, and are always available to help installers with individual issues. "It takes many years of hard work and diligence to truly master this trade," says Rick Kozlow, technical service manager for Accent Distributing LLC and a 3M instructor. Hands-on training can help a new installer master a professional paint protection film application, especially around the more chal- lenging curves and recesses of a vehicle. Proper training prepares installers for the assorted variables they will encounter.
