When I first heard the news that there would be no Elkhart Open House Week this year, I was initially dismayed at the prospect. Granted, I knew RV manufacturers were making the right decision in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, but I was concerned that without a planned physical gathering manufacturers might hold back on how much they were willing to share with us about their 2021 models. And that, in turn, led me to wonder if we could produce a September issue on par with previous years. In hindsight, both concerns were overblown. As we reached out to reps for the various RV makers, we found they were more than willing to talk about their latest and greatest products, even in certain instances where models were still being finalized. Thankfully, company representatives saw the value in getting the word out about their 2021 models. As a result, I'm happy to report that this year's coverage of RV makers is actually slightly larger than the past two September issues of RV PRO. Still another initial concern I had was that, with demand for RVs being so strong currently, manufacturers might simply devote their energies to ramping up production of existing models and be less focused on product development and innovation for their 2021 models. My concern was that could result in fewer new products for us to showcase in this issue. Instead, what multiple product managers, sales managers and others told RV PRO was that they used the downtime when factories were closed because of COVID-19 to brainstorm new product developments and enhancements to take their RVs to the next level. As Coachmen GM Fred Hershberger told us, "One thing COVID did for us was give us six to seven weeks with no production to sit down, think, and listen to campers about what they do with their campers, where they use them and how we, as manufacturers, can help." I think you will find those efforts paid off when you begin reading this month's special section dedicated to showcasing 2021 models. RV PRO sincerely thanks everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to speak with us. RV PRO Welcomes Mike Clark I'm happy to announce that Mike Clark has joined RV PRO as contributing editor.
