88 THE SHOP NOVEMBER 2020 Plug-In Classics reports. "And, we have trunk space, which is not the case with some conversions." Smartly, Harrison installed both AC and DC charging plugs—the AC plug uses the fuel cap location and the DC plug is where the tailpipe used to be. His philosophy is simple: "Once cars are converted to electric, they can be utilized more, with less maintenance and ongoing costs, and enjoyed by more people." CHARGED UP Of all the classic brands to be electrified, I've found Porsche to be the most incon- gruous. Still, Porsches have the attention of electro modifiers. For example, as this article was coming together, I got a message from the Petersen Automotive Museum saying that it was giving away a Tesla-powered 1968 Porsche 911 and $20,000. The promo blatantly states that the 911 is powered by a Tesla Model S P85 motor that drives through the rear wheels via an automatic transmission. They say it has maximum horsepower of 500-plus compared to the 911's original 90 hp and includes a Level 2 charge port, rear decklid solar panel, upgraded sport sus- pension, drilled disc brakes, LED lighting, a Bluetooth sound system with Alpine speakers and subwoofer, and more. The 911 was built by Zelectric Motors in San Diego (profiled in the December 2017 issue of THE SHOP), which works exclusively with vintage air-cooled Volks- wagens and early Porsches, generally 1979 and earlier. According to its website, Zelectric retro- fits start at $62,000 (over 300 hours of work go into that), and Zelectric mods for Porsche start at $85,000, using your core vehicle. The only downside I could see was the T wisted, a builder known for its upfitted 4x4s, has put an electric twist on the popular Land Rover Defender. The Twisted 4x4 NAS-E is designed as a nod to the original North American Specification (NAS) short wheelbase Soft- Top 90 body type. Available in two trim levels, NAS-E and NAS-E Plus, it features high-voltage power, exclusive electric powertrain technology, interior upgrades and everyday drivability, according to the company. "As the world moves steadily toward mass electrification, the Californian market has been missing a uniquely stylish electric 4x4 option that can stand out at the beach, off-road and at stoplights with a level of exclusivity and prestige that can only come from the timeless British Defender form," says Bruce Riggs, COO, Twisted North America. "With color schemes reflecting the natural beauty of California, a removable soft top shape to fully live the elements, advanced elec- tric powertrain engineering exclusive to Twisted, zero-emission power, practical battery range and luxuriously modern interior touches, the Twisted NAS-E is the ultimate expression of the American coastal lifestyle." Limited to a run of 30 vehicles, the Twisted 4x4 NAS-E powertrain includes U.S.-made electric motors that deliver power on demand. Compliant with North American EV regulations and California CARB regulations, the NAS-E is offered with a BorgWarner Remy motor delivering more than 280 pound-feet of torque and 214 brake hp, while the NAS-E Plus is upped to 309 pound-feet of torque and 320 brake hp. Specs include a 22kWh charging system with fast-charging available. Access to public charging infrastructure and a 60kWh battery pack provide a 200-mile battery range. Additional upgrades include progressive suspension, performance braking, uprated drivetrain, and a refined interior with infotainment options. First test drives were expected to be available in early October, with an overall build lead time of nine months. Tim Harrison of Charged Garage in Australia swapped a NetGain Hyper 9 electric motor and Tesla battery pack into a vintage 1965 Mk1 Ford Cortina. The Cortina now has a range of 112 miles and includes both AC and DC charging plugs—the AC plug uses the fuel cap location and the DC plug is where the tailpipe used to be. The Land Rover Defender Goes Electric Available in two trim levels, the electric Twist- ed 4x4 NAS-E features high-voltage power, exclusive electric powertrain technology, interior upgrades and everyday drivability.
