I think we can all hope for a better, more promising year for our country – a year in which the 2020 coronavirus pandemic starts to recede and life begins to return to normal. When it comes to the RV industry, I won't pretend that I have any penetrating insights into what the year ahead holds. However, I can tell you that I'm generally optimistic based upon insights shared from people who follow leading macroeconomic indicators, people who track RV industry benchmarks, and from my own conversations with many industry professionals. One such upbeat assessment on the national economy comes from Sophia Koropeckyj, managing director of Industry Economics at the research firm Moody's Analytics. "The COVID-19 recession is over, and the economy is currently in an early-cycle expansion," Koropeckyj shared in this month's feature article, "Forecast 2021: A Return to Normalcy." Other economic trend watchers were similarly upbeat in their assessments for the national economy, while acknowledging that some issues – such as supply chain disruptions – will take time to resolve themselves. As for the RV industry, the RV Industry Association is forecasting that shipments for the year are likely to come in at around 507,200 units – which would represent a nearly 20 percent increase over 2020 and the best annual total on record for the industry. It's hard to imagine a better outcome on that account. Of course, predicting RV sales for the year ahead has historically been a much more challenging endeavor. However, I'm happy to report that Jason Krantz, the CEO and founder of Strategy Titan, a Chicago-based retail forecasting, strategic analytics, and market intelligence firm, has undertaken that challenge – and he has generously shared his insights with RV PRO's readers in his guest column for this issue. Not only does Krantz predict RV sales will increase this year, but he also offers insights on sales by RV type and areas of the country, so you will want to be sure to check out what he has to say. Adding weight to Krantz's forecasting, many of the dealers I speak with are similarly optimistic about the year ahead, assuming they can get re-supplied with inventory in a timely manner. Still, while the outlook for 2021 seems promising, John Spader with Spader Business Management is encouraging dealers not to get complacent. In remarks he made during an RVDA virtual seminar, Spader exhorted dealers, saying, "Bad habits are made in good times; good habits are made in bad times. What bad habits are we slipping into?" Be sure to check out the rest of Spader's remarks in this month's recap coverage of the 2020 Virtual RV Dealers Association Convention/ Expo. Whatever the new year holds, all of us here at RV PRO wish for health and happiness – and a return to normalcy – for you and your business in the new year.
