The other responsibilities a small busi- ness owner has include marketing, sales, and accounting, at minimum. If you are the only worker, consider that your salary needs to cover all these responsibilities, in- cluding production. You may not be able to pay yourself a salary now, or at least not at this calculat- ed rate; however, it should be considered in your pricing. You now have an expec- tation and goal to shoot for. WHAT PRICING HAS TO COVER In addition to salaries and a reasonable profit, what are all the other costs that must be covered by your prices? Let's focus on the costs most often forgotten. Obvious everyday expenses include your rent, utilities, insurance, and the cost of consumables and small equipment (those things that you don't consider assets that can be resold or have real value when you retire). Others to include: computers, software, taxes, training, and education. Don't forget services such as web host- ing, internet, and phone, which can be expensive. Professional services may include pay- roll, tax preparation, legal, and account- ing. Maintenance and repairs including those related to your shop and your equip- ment are often not considered. Don't for- get your laser will need parts replacement such as an X-axis motor and an expensive laser tube at some point.
