G R A P H I C S - P R O. C O M I t started with a request in 1995 from a German distributor of KPMF vinyl. The need was to completely cover a taxi in the mandated beige color and ensure the lm could be removed when the cab was retired from service years later without damage. This would allow the taxi company to sell a near-pristine black sedan at auc- tion for a higher return and eliminate the need for repainting vehicles. The lm developed by KPMF al- lowed the rst color change wraps to take place in 1996. Success in Germany created a market in the UK where KPMF was founded in 1991. UK com- mercial and cab companies began us- ing the newly developed VWS (Vehicle Wrapping System) vinyl and 45 more colors were developed, all at 60" width. The "Stick up for Vinyl" article from Commercial Motor in early 2000 de- tails the process of wrapping a van for the bargain price of £450 in about a day. Quality and durability was key from the inception of the VWS range with the lm being removed up to three years following installation. This initial hybrid lm was similar to the VWS 1 range KPMF still offers today. Cast wrapping products were developed in the early 2000s and in- cluded metallic and iridescent color shifting options by 2008. These unique colors aided in the growth of the color change industry throughout Europe. While the core business of KPMF was its parent company Kay Automotive Graphics, which pro- duced OEM decals for the world's automotive manufacturers, it intro- duced several colors and improved the installation of its wrapping products over the years. In 2014, a USA manu- facturing site was built in part to support the grow- ing wrap market, which now had several man- ufacturers producing color change ranges. This location allowed KPMF to develop a large cast range that the industry was request- ing. Since the launch of KPMF USA, over 50 new colors and effects have been launched. The color change market sees constant growth year over year and more than a dozen manufacturers combine to offer endless color and nish options around the world. Today KPMF offers 100- plus cast and calendered options across its network of global distributors. They include gloss, high-gloss, matte, satin, carbon, and specialty laminate ranges developed and produced in the USA and UK. The acqui- sition of the Kay Group by ORAFOL in late 2019 has made KPMF a part of the largest producer of pressure sensi- tive worldwide. Together, the compa- nies combined passion for continuous improvement and innovation will bring advances to the color change industry for years to come.
