T he kids these days have a saying that's meant to try to keep people from getting the wrong impression from first appearances or to not be negative even though they know the situation looks bad: "Don't judge." It's well-meaning, but being human and all, withholding judgement is downright impossible. We judge everything, all the time, by first impressions, appearances, sounds, smells, and even association. Sometimes it puts you in a hole right away because you've truly gotten the wrong first impression, but over time you realize that you aren't so much being "judgy" as you are using your experience to look at a situa- tion and determine common factors to past results. As a business, you are on the receiving end of this all the time. Your website. Your storefront. Your shop vehicles. e way you answer your phone or reply to emails. More judgments than a daytime TV lineup. In the graphics industry, it's important to remember that your website, shop vehicle, storefront, or reception area has a tremendous impact on the people who see them. You will be judged based on those things, mainly because they will assume you are going to put that same kind of effort into the project or print job they are approach- ing you about. is is why it's important to make your branding and shop marketing your top prior- ity. You wouldn't dress haphazardly and sloppily for a job interview, so don't give your potential customers a similar first impression by having anything less than a perfect resume on display for them to see.
