In the world of images, balance means that the total combination of colors is harmo- nious, unified, and pleasing to the eye. ey exist in a dynamic equilibrium that enhances each color and strengthens the essential characteristics of the picture. e application of color is both a science and an art based on color theory and the psy- chology of color. TOOLS No doubt you are aware of basic color correction features that are available in image editing software. Brightness and Contrast, Levels, Curves and Hue/ Saturation are the nuts and bolts of color correction and contrast adjustment. Applied individually, they can extend the range of color and improve contrast. ese features are critical to the color correction workflow and are essential tools for enhancing color and con- trast in any image editing software. ere are, how- ever, even more specific tools that are designed to handle unique color problems. CALIBRATE A lthough I've said it before in other articles, it's worth saying again; c olor m a n a gement i s essential for predictable results at the printer. Before making color adjustments, calibrate your hardware to determine what the colors on your moni- tor actually represent.
