December 2014 n Performance & Hotrod Business n 29 Nitrous Oxide Systems Bowling Green, Kentucky Alex Healey Content Coordinator Our hottest Nitrous Oxide product for the performance aftermarket is… …the "Cheater" Holley 4-barrel/Carter AFB plate kit (P/N 02001NOS). Its best features include… …since the plate is designed for the 4150 carb flange, it fits a wide variety of vehicles. It includes all of the basics you need to install a high-quality nitrous sys- tem on your vehicle. Instead of piecing everything together, NOS has taken all of the guesswork out of the equation. It can provide anywhere from 150- 250-hp worth of nitrous with the included jets, making it popular for mild to wild race cars. New technology is affecting the Nitrous market by… …making nitrous easier to use. There are many aspects that go into effectively using a nitrous kit. The availability of high-quality nitrous controllers and accessories like wide open throttle activation switches, window switches, air/fuel ratio monitoring equip- ment, smart bottle heaters, etc., make running a nitrous kit much easier and consistent. The days of guys heating their bottles with propane torches in the pits are long gone. The most common mistake aftermarket shops make when choosing a proper Nitrous system for a customer is… …not using a nitrous filter. Not using one will yield the same results as someone who does not use a fuel filter on their car. Contaminants from the fill bottle, fill equipment, and even the lines and sole- noids can cause jets to clog, or even force solenoids to hang open. You cannot count on nitrous fill stations to use filters on their equipment. Using a nitrous filter is cheap insurance against these issues. NOS offers various nitrous fittings with mesh screens, as well as a dedicated inline filter. A tip to make installations easier and safer is… …always use all of the recommended safety items. This means having a good window switch, a purge, a high-quality bottle with a pressure release valve, a WOT activation switch, air/fuel ratio gauges, bottle heater, filter, etc. While the main draw to nitrous for most people is the big power gains with a minimal investment, skimping on these sorts of items can cause very expensive problems. Additionally, a progressive con- troller like the NOS Launcher can make things easier on the car while helping it perform better. Having the ability to ramp into your nitrous removes the sudden shock of a big nitrous hit on your entire drivetrain, allowing you to dial in how much nitrous the car can handle based on the traction provided by the track surface, as well as the car's limitations. The availability of high-quality nitrous controllers and accessories like wide open throttle activation switches, window switches, air/fuel ratio monitoring equip- ment and smart bottle heaters make run- ning a nitrous kit much easier and consistent.
