Manufacturers tend to specialize, because "to compete with another manufacturer over price—it just wouldn't be worth it." "They get expensive," Christina agrees, "and they have to have a market capable of sustaining sales." Several manufacturers saw sales slump with the 2008 recession, but for some, at least, the market is beginning to turn around. "As a company," says Whitaker, "including bodies and parts, Real Deal Steel increased sales 50 percent in 2014 over 2013. Demand for our new bodies was a major contributor. We installed a second assembly station during 2014, and plan to add a third in 2015." Goodmark saw 2014 sales grow 18 percent over 2013, "and we are continuing to have great sales in the first month of 2015," Pascale adds. Dearborn Deuce and American Speed both reported increas- ing interest from overseas customers. "We have shipped bodies to Canada, Scandinavia, England, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand—among others," says Loewengruber, while domestic interest has "paralleled recent improvements on the economic front." In the long term, demand can only rise as the available origi- nals are either snapped up for restoration or hopelessly reclaimed by rust. John F.
