16 Restyling & tRuck AccessoRies | April 2015 restylingmag.com The shop, RPM Offroad LLC, was founded in 2006, while its race team, Team RPM Offroad, was founded a year later. In nine short years in business, the organiza- tion has taken the desert-racing scene by storm and built a rabid following among hardcore offroaders in the process. While the leafy green backdrop of Bristol may appear in stark contrast to Dakar or Baja, RPM Offroad founder and Team RPM Offroad driver Justin Matney notes that they're not all that different when it comes to racing. A Born Competitor and Entrepreneur Today, Team RPM Offroad— which most recently won the 2014 SCORE International Baja 1000 champi- onship for Class 1—holds a host of SCORE International and Best in the Desert (BITD) championships. With that level of success, it's hard to imagine that Matney, 29, was a 20-year-old kid fresh out of Nashville Auto D i e s e l College when he launched the com- pany less than a decade ago. "RPM Offroad was my first venture into the offroad industry from the sales and install side," Matney says. "But I have been into offroading since I was very young, racing motocross and supercross from an early age. Every weekend, Jereme Miltier (RPM Offroad's shop manager) and I would be working on our own vehicles in a barn. It wasn't long before word started to spread around school and we started get- ting asked to do lift kits and other projects for our friends and other kids at school." Matney, the son of an entrepreneur in the coal industry, seemed destined to be in business for himself. "My father was in the coal industry and I was able to join him on different proj- ects and meetings growing up," he says. "Even by that time, I knew that if you were passionate and wanted to work hard, you could make anything happen." But as a 20-year-old fresh out of school, Matney met his fair share of doubters on the way. Shop profile Jereme Miltier Justin Matney
