A total of 215 miles of desert mountain terrain that is so unforgiving, so ungodly, that only a handful of the professional teams that start the race will actually make it to the finish line. It's the Nitto King of the Hammers (KOH) and it truly defines the sport of offroad racing. The goal for teams is not just to participate or compete in the race, they must endure it. The vehicles over- come the harshest conditions, the rockiest mountains and the toughest competitors just to make it across the finish line. Many try, but few make it. This year's KOH race, held Feb. 1-6, cul- minated a week-long series of races in the high desert of Johnson Valley, Calif., and drew an estimated 60,000 spectators and 430 competitors, turning the population of the area from a few hundred lizards and tumbleweeds into a city the size of Palo Alto, Calif. The temporary city even has a name: Hammertown.
