As an elementary school student, Todd recalls, he enjoyed "going to his shows, seeing him sandblasting, and just being absolutely in love with the pieces he was making and in awe of them." Since Smith's home-based business was the Glassmith, Todd naturally took the name Glassmith2 when he founded his own company in 2002. When he moved Glassmith2 to north Boulder in 2008, he started with a 500-square-foot building and a sandcarving cabinet that he'd purchased with leftover student aid money. "My goal was to pay for the rent of the shop every month," Todd says. His first offerings were gift items, which he sold at art shows, and beer mugs. "Lots and lots of beer mugs," says Alison Todd, Braden Todd's wife and "the glue that holds things together," according to Braden. After four years, though, Glassmith2 needed more room. The couple, who mar- ried in 2012, noticed an available com- mercial space near one of their favorite For the 5430 Sprint Marathon—one of the Ironman races held in Boulder, Colorado—in 2012, Braden Todd crafted trophies out of trees that had been recovered from the Four Mile Canyon fire the previous fall. The jagged top of this stone award for the 2014 Boulder Peak Triathlon is designed to look similar to the view of the Rocky Mountains from Colorado's Front Range, where Boulder and Denver are located.
