A&E SEPTEMBER 2016 • 61 POPULAR DÉCOR With a wide variety of substrates available for the kitchen and home comes a wide variety of ways to decorate them. Depending on your customer's wants and needs, along with the substrate itself, sublimation is one of the top ways to embellish these goods. "I think sublimation decorating is the low-cost, high-profit technology of choice," Gross believes. The reason being, he adds, is that sublimation produces vivid images in a short amount of time. Plus, the amount of items that are subli- matable are virtually endless. The JDS team is also keen on laser engraving and sandcarving as popular methods for decorating kitchen and house ware. When it comes to laser engraving, they emphasize that shape should be considered carefully. "Cylindrical and tapering objects (without steep angles at the top and bottom) fit on a rotary attachment best," the team notes. "Also, if an object is rounded vertically and horizontally, the engraving area may be small." Foy and Waters add to that point, stating that you should always follow instruc- tions and recommendations from your distributor when decorating any item. "Make sure you follow the template so nothing is cut off," they add. BRING THE SALE HOME Having these items in stock and ready to decorate is one thing—selling them is another. The good news is the conversation is easy to start with your existing clientele using the right approach. 20 Kitchen and House Ware Item Ideas • Mugs • Cutting boards • Wall art/message boards • Towels • Aprons • Serving trays • Coasters • Oven mitts • Placemats • Fridge magnets • Wine boxes • Floor mats • Smartphone and tablet stands • Pillow cases • Mirrors • Vases • Rolling pins • Cutlery • Plates/bowls • Coat rack IMAGE COURTESY TROTEC LASER For unique kitchen items, offer your customers bamboo salad bowls, cutting boards and utensils.
